We are starting the second week of Baking marathon and if you have read my introduction post , you would be aware that I have taken themes for each week.

After a week of healthy bakes- one that is converted from deep fried to baked, the second week kicks off with surprises! Well, who doesn’t like surprises! So here is one for you too.

The theme this week is – Surprise Inside Cakes. The cakes will look like an ordinary cake from the outside but once the cake it cut, it reveals a surprise!!!

The first cake in this series is the one I baked for Lil Dudes b’day. When I was looking for birthday cake ideas, the kids huddled near me to see what I was going to bake for them.

Lil Dude wanted a rainbow cake .He is learning colors now and was so fascinated by the idea of a cake with many colors. Counting numbers with his little fingers he showed 4 ,meaning he wanted 4 colors in his cake. And mommy baked it for him!

I used the basic vanilla cake recipe and baked the cake in a bundt pan as the kids love bundts.

This is a fairly easy cake as all you have to do is mix the batter, divide it into 4 part, add food color, pour as layers into a pan and bake. I made a chocolate frosting and decorated it with M&M’s/ Gems and added sprinkles for some color…

Lil Dude loved it and was jumping with joy when he saw the colors inside.

I used:

All purpose flour – 1 1/2 cup
Thick yogurt – 1 cup
Sugar -1 cup
Baking powder- 1 teaspoon
Baking soda -1/2 teaspoon
Sunflower oil – 1/2 cup
Vanilla essence- 1 teaspoon
Food colors- a few drops
[I used- Super rouge ,Lemon yellow, deep pink, sky blue]

Chocolate frosting
Gems and sprinkles

Grease and dust a bundt pan and keep aside.Sift the flour.

In a large bowl take the sugar, add curd and whisk till the sugar dissolves. Put in baking powder and baking soda.Mix gently and keep aside for 5 minutes

The mixture will froth up.Add oil, vanilla essence and flour. Mix to combine but don’t beat / over mix. Just see to that the flour is incorporated into the curd mixture.Divide the batter into 4 parts.

Add a drop of gel food color into each bowl and mix. Pout one color into the prepared bundt pan. Pout the next color above it. You can see how it is done in the pics below.

Bake in a pre heated oven @ 180 C for 25 minutes / till a skewer inserted comes out clean. Remove from the oven.Let it rest outside for 5 minutes and gently invert the pan and place the cake on a wire rack to cool.

After the cake is completely cool , spread chocolate frosting and decorate it with gems and sprinkles.

Note:

  • I used a bundt pan. This can be bakes in other pans as well.
  • Use any color of your choice.

I enjoyed making this cake and the kids enjoyed it too. What are you waiting for? Fire up your oven and bake this one and watch you our kids fall in love with this cake…

  1. PJ, I was waiting for you to post this ever since you shared this with us on watsapp! It has turned out so beautifully! Now I'm all eager for the remaining surprise inside cakes!!!

  2. That is a stunning 4-layer cake PJ. The colours have come out so well. Love the idea you baked them at one shot instead of preparing individual cakes and then layering. Iam too tempted to try this beauty. Perfect spongy Eggless Vanilla cake too.

  3. I remember this cake and it looks so fabulous PJ. The chocolate brown outside contrasts extremely well with the layers of colors inside. Lil dude must have been very very happy!
