If, by chance, you see me now, I will probably be dancing! The reason- Lil Dude got admitted into Kindergarten and I can’t help but do the happy dance!I have been waiting for this moment and a couple of day back the interview results were put up on the school’s notice board!

And let me tell you getting an admission for kindergarten here is as tough as passing an IAS examination! No kidding!I asked mom if she was anxious as I was when she waited for my admission card and my parents said they were very cool and knew that I would get a seat.

With Lil Angel, I had been worried unnecessarily. She spoke well during the interview  that had   lasted less than 2 minutes and I knew I had under estimated her.

But with Lil Dude I was extra worried, not that I underestimated his ‘talents’. He is either too shy
or too playful. The BM team who met him will vouch for what I said! So I was worried if he would even say his name when asked!

Unlike Lil Angel’s interview, this time we had to wait longer to be called. There was a huge crowd of kids, their parents and their grandparents too. The elders had a worried look on their face and I am guessing each one of them had a fear or two about their wards. The kids on the other hand were jumping and running around and after a while got restless, bored, hungry or sleepy!

There were a few kids who were crying their eyes out and began to run as soon as the parents got ready to take them to the Principal’s room.Perhaps the kids thought they were about to be given a shot or rather imagined to be entering a lion’s den!I watched Lil Dude’s face to see his reaction to such behavior but he was unperturbed.

Finally his name was called and we went to meet the Principal.Lil Dude walked in without hesitation and wished him Good Morning! I was surprised! Then promptly answered his name and sat like a doll on the chair while the Principal spoke to us. I must admit that I was astonished!

The result was announced a few days later and I almost did
the happy dance when I saw his name on the notice board. But I
controlled myself and walked on to the office room to complete the other
formalities.

Lil Dude will be off to school in a few months and I am so happy to finally get some ‘me’ time!At last!

But I am sure I will miss him. He is always somewhere near, calling out to me, asking me play with him or crying to get my attention, tagging along everywhere I go.But I think that phase too shall pass and I will be able to do all those things that I have been wanting to do all this while.

Okay, before I make the other moms jealous, let me move on to the recipe of the day…

We are three days into baking with fruits and the chosen fruit today is tutti frutti.Tutti frutti is nothing but candied papaya pieces! It is actually candied raw papaya pieces. And did you know that you can make this tutti frutti at home! Well, if its news to you, watch out for a post in the coming days where I will be posting the method.

Though made from raw papaya, tutti frutti is categorized under candied fruits so I used this from the dish of the day.

This is the fourth dish that I baked for this series – Fire Up Your Oven. While getting ready for this baking marathon,I usually baked 2-3 dishes a day.So I made them all in either single serve sizes or halved the recipe so that there would be no leftovers.

I loved the color of these cupcakes. Needless to say,the kids enjoyed it.I wished I had made some more but at that time halving the recipe was the sound thing to do…

I adapted this recipe from Priya’s Cook N Click blog. I replaced speculoos with tutti frutti and halved the recipe and made 5 cupcakes.

I used:
Adapted from Cook N Click
Makes– 5 cupcakes

Tutti frutti -1/8 cup + few for topping
All purpose flour- 1/2 cup + a teaspoon for dusting the tutti frutti
Custard powder- 1/4 cup
Milk-6 tablespoons
Oil-1/8 cup
Baking powder-1/2 teaspoon
Sugar-1/4 cup
Salt- a pinch
Vanilla essence- 1/4 teaspoon

Take the tutti frutti in a bowl and add a teaspoon of APF and shake well to coat. Keep aside. Sift together the APF, custard powder, baking powder and salt.

Take milk in a bowl, add sugar , oil, vanilla essence and mix to dissolve the sugar.

To the milk mixture , add the flour and tutti frutti.Gently combine to mix. Fill into a tray with cup cake liners. Add a few tutti frutti on top.Bake in a pre heated oven @ 180 degrees for 20-25 minutes or till a skewer inserted into the cake comes out clean. Please  note that the oven timings will vary.
Once the cup cakes are done, remove from tray and cool on a wire rack.

The cakes are ready to be served!

Doesn’t it have a lovely texture!!!

  1. I would not judge you if you did the happy dance in public, at school itself. ๐Ÿ™‚ I know how worries and tensed parents are back home for their kids admissions. Congratulations to you and lil dude! Tutti frutti cupcakes are colorful and irresistible

  2. Congratulations PJ ! I can make out your excitement in your post and truly understand your feelings. Perhaps it was the same for me too years back. God Bless him.
The cupcakes with tutti fruity are a perfect way to celebrate. They look awesome.

  3. Congrats, I get your excitement! I did the happy dance myself not so long ago :-). How muchever we love our kids, we need that 'our time' as well. Anyway…the cake looks great!

  4. Wow those are some colorful cupcakes!
Is your son already 5? Congrats for getting him into the school system.
Now after living abroad for so many years, I think the elementary school system is ridiculous in India, even if anyone consider me being impertinent here. I really can't understand why so much competition for little ones getting into school.

  5. hahah…I can well imagine your state PJ..though we went through this tensed period some 5 yrs back, its still fresh in mind and every year have colleagues who go through this torture!..now it's become even worse with schools accepting in pre schools only, when the kid is hardly 21/2..Congrats to your lil one..and nice way to celebrate!

  6. Congrats to little dude and to you too PJ — getting some 'me' time is always awesome. My LO goes to school 2 days a week and I've million things planned to do during that time. I end up doing nothing is totally a different story ๐Ÿ™‚
Your eggless, butterless custard cupcakes look amazing.

  7. We are out of the admission loop not being in India, but I can imagine how excited you will be. Congratulations to all of you and good luck to the little one. The cupcakes looks super delicious and love the color of the cupcake.

  8. PJ I know that you were worried abt the kiddos admission. But I know the lil scientist's admission was assured you worry unnecessarily.
